What Is Inside a Custom Insole?

A custom pair is a stack, not one slab of foam. The printed shell holds the arch. Foam and fabric are what your foot touches.

Insole materials laid out on a workbench, including the printed shell and soft layers

A custom insole is easier to judge when you know what is in your hand. It is not a single piece of foam with a logo. It is a stack. One part is printed to the shape of a foot. The other parts are there so that shape is something you can stand on all day.

The four parts

Turn a pair over and you can pick the layers apart by eye.

  • Printed arch shell. This is the firm shape under the midfoot. It is printed in PA12 nylon on HP Multi Jet Fusion printers, from the scan of that foot. The left shell and the right shell are printed separately.
  • Deep heel cup. The back of the insole rises into a cup that cradles the heel so the pair stays seated in the shoe.
  • Cushioning. A foam layer sits above the shell, and a separate cushion pad sits under the heel, where each step lands.
  • Fabric cover. A soft, breathable cloth is the surface you see. That cloth is printed with the design you chose.

The shell is the custom part. The foam, the heel cushion, and the cover are the same kind of finish on every design. How it works shows the same stack next to the scan that shapes the shell.

What is printed, and what is added after

Only the arch shell comes out of the printer. There is no mold for your foot. Powder is fused in thin layers, loose powder is cleared off, and the shell is then built into an insole you can wear. Foam, the heel cushion, and the fabric cover are added after the print. A bare nylon shell would follow your arch and still feel hard. The soft layers are why the pair is a shoe insole and not a plastic model of your foot.

That order is also why we wait for the scan. Without the photos, there is no shape to print. You choose a US shoe size for the outline. The scan is still required for the arch. The outline also follows a length, Full Length or 3/4 Length. 3/4 Length is coming soon. The arch does not. Both lengths use this same stack, and both are $69.99. The page shows $99.99 crossed out.

What the design actually changes

The 16 designs are the fabric. Nebula, Glacier, Carbon Cell, and the rest sit on the same kind of shell, cup, and foam. Picking a color does not pick a shoe size, and it does not pick a different arch. You still choose a length for the shoes you wear, pay, and scan after checkout with the same email.

If you want the length decision on its own, the full length and 3/4 length guide is the one to read. This page is only the stack those lengths share.

How the stack sits in a shoe

Full Length runs from heel to toe and replaces the insole the shoe came with, once that insole lifts out. 3/4 Length stops just behind the ball of the foot and sits on top of the original insole. In both cases the heel cup goes to the back of the shoe, and the printed arch stays where the scan put it. You trim the toe of a Full Length pair if the edge bunches. You do not trim the shell.

Shoes with a glued-in footbed, and cycling shoes that already fit like a sock, often have no room for this stack. Look inside the shoe before you order. The insole cannot make a tight shoe into a roomy one.

You receive a finished pair, not a kit

Made to order means the shell is not pulled from a bin of sizes. The cover is one of 16 fabrics. The foam and the heel cushion are the same finish every time. The shell still waits for your file. On the bench, the sequence is print, clear the loose powder, then build the cushion, the foam, and the cover into one insole. You do not get a bag of parts to glue at home. If you peel the cover back to "see the print," you are damaging the pair.

That build is why US delivery is within 14 days, not the same afternoon. Canada and the UK take longer, as shipping and returns says. The email on the order is the one that has to match the scan. A different inbox means the shell we would print is not tied to the payment we already took. A drugstore insole can feel soft on day one because it is foam of one shape in a size run, and that foam can pack down later. Here the softness is the top, and the shape is printed. The $69.99, with $99.99 crossed out, is for that shell, the scan that creates it, and the soft layers. It is not a clinic visit.

What to check when the pair arrives

The cover should be intact, the heel cushion should be in place, and the shell should be one piece. US orders are made after the scan is matched to the order, and delivery is within 14 days. If a layer has split, or the pair is damaged, email support@customsole.shop with the order number. A new pair can smell faintly of foam, fabric, or adhesive. Air it out of the shoes, in the shade, and that smell fades. Do not put it in a dryer to speed that up.

You can change or cancel within 24 hours of checkout. A cancellation in that window is refunded. After that, the pair cannot be returned or refunded. A pair that arrives damaged or made wrong is replaced, not refunded. The details are on shipping and returns.

What the stack is for

The shell holds an arch shape taken from your scan. The foam and the heel cushion soften the step. The cover is the surface and the design. None of that is a medical exam, and none of it tells you whether a foot needs a clinician. If a foot hurts, see a podiatrist. This is a comfort insole at one price.

When you are ready to see the layers on a product page, start with the full collection. The scan that sets the shell comes after you pay, on complete your scan, using the checkout email.

Frequently asked questions

Is the whole insole 3D printed?

No. The arch shell is printed in PA12. Foam, a heel cushion, and a fabric cover are added after the print.

Do the 16 designs have different insides?

No. The design is the fabric cover. The shell, heel cup, and foam are the same idea on every color.

Does Full Length use a different stack than 3/4 Length?

No. Length changes how much of the shoe the insole covers. Both are $69.99, and both are printed from your scan.

Why does a new pair smell?

Foam, fabric, and adhesive can smell when they are new. Air the pair in the shade, out of the shoes. Do not tumble dry it.

Can I order the shell without the foam?

No. Every pair ships as the full stack. The shell alone is not the product.
