How to Care for 3D Printed Insoles

Air them out, wipe the cover, and keep them out of washers, dryers, and hot cars. The shell and the foam do not like the same mistakes.

Care is mostly what you do not do. A printed insole is a stack: a PA12 shell, a heel cup, cushioning foam, and a fabric cover. The shell can take daily wear. The foam and the glue between layers cannot take a washer, a dryer, or a closed car in the sun. This is the routine. When to replace a pair is a different article.

The day they arrive

Open the box and let the pair air, out of the shoes, somewhere shaded and not next to a heater. Foam, fabric, and adhesive can smell when they are new. The smell fades. It is not dirt, and it is not a reason to wash the pair before you have worn it. Do not put a new pair in the sun "to air faster," and do not tumble dry it.

Check the cover, the heel cushion, and the shell before the first wear. If a layer is already split, email support@customsole.shop with the order number instead of washing it. A pair that arrives damaged or made wrong is replaced. Then install them the way the length requires. Those steps are in how to put custom insoles in your shoes.

After you wear them

When the shoes come off, take the insoles out if the day was hot or the socks were wet. Stand them somewhere with air, fabric up, out of direct sun. The shoe should dry too. A wet shoe with the insole left inside stays wet on both sides of the foam. Do this most days you actually sweat. You do not need a ritual on a dry ten-minute walk, but the habit is the same one: moisture out, heat away.

Left stays with the left shoe, right with the right, even while they dry. The shells were printed from different scans. A windowsill that gets afternoon sun is a bad drying rack. Shade on a table is enough.

The wipe

When the cover looks dusty or salty, wipe it. You do not need a schedule more precise than "when it looks like it needs it," which for daily wear is often about once a week.

  1. Take the insoles out.
  2. Wipe the fabric with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap. A soft brush is enough for a spot of dirt.
  3. Wipe again with a cloth dampened in clean water, so soap does not stay in the cover.
  4. Air dry until the pair is fully dry. Then put it back.

Do not run them under a tap. Do not leave them in a basin. Water that soaks the foam works into the bond between foam, shell, and cover. Hot water is worse. The public care note we follow is simple: damp wipe, shade, no machine, no soak, no sun.

Heat, rain, and the gym bag

A car in summer is an oven. Foam and adhesive do not like that, and a shell can warp. Do not leave the shoes, with or without the insoles, on the seat in the sun. If you get caught in rain, get the insoles out of the shoes as soon as you are indoors and dry them in the shade. Do not put them on a radiator.

A gym bag is fine for an hour. It is a poor home for a wet pair overnight. Hang the shoes, insoles out, when you can. If you have two pairs, rotate them so each foam top gets a day to recover. That is the same idea as letting running shoes rest. AAOS talks about foam in athletic shoes wearing down with miles. Your cover is the soft part of this stack, and it ages the same way. Replacement timing is in how long insoles last.

Grit, salt, and mud

Dry dirt is the easy case. Take the insoles outside, tap them, and brush loose grit off the underside of the shell with a dry hand or a soft brush. Then do the damp wipe on the cover if the fabric needs it. Do not turn a muddy pair into a soaking pair. Let thick mud dry in the shade until it is crumbs, brush those off, then wipe. Road salt should come off sooner, because it stays damp and gritty in the cloth. A beach day is the same idea: sand off, outside, then a wipe. A hose is too much water.

If you own two pairs, alternate days so each foam top spends a night out of a shoe. That is the rotation our longer lifespan note describes, and it is also the simplest way to keep a cover from staying clammy. One pair can still be cared for. It just spends more hours in the shoe, so the after-wear airing matters more. None of this changes the arch. You are only keeping the stack together.

What care cannot restore

Wiping will not plump foam that stays flat overnight. It will not close a cover that has rubbed through. It will not straighten a shell that was cut or cracked. When the top is done, the shell may still look fine. That is normal. The parts age at different speeds. A reorder can use the scan already on your email. You do not wash your way back to week one.

Also skip the home experiments: bleach, alcohol baths, the dishwasher, the freezer. None of those are part of the product. If you want the foam described on its own, read the foam top.

Where this fits the order

Every pair is $69.99, Full Length or 3/4 Length, with $99.99 crossed out on the page. The 16 designs take the same care. The print on the fabric does not make one color more washable than another. The scan that shaped the shell happens after you pay. How it works is the order of those steps. Care starts when the pair is in the house, and it is the same whether you wear them to a desk or on a long shift.

If a foot hurts, see a podiatrist. Cleaning the cover is not a response to that. It only keeps the pair you already bought in wearable shape.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put the insoles in the washing machine?

No. Machine washing soaks the foam and can split the layers. Wipe the cover and air dry it in the shade.

Can I use a hair dryer?

No. Heat can warp the shell and shrink the foam. Let the pair dry at room temperature, out of the sun.

How do I get rid of the new smell?

Air the pair in the shade, out of the shoes. The smell is from foam, fabric, and adhesive, and it fades. Do not bake it off.

Should I take them out every single day?

Take them out when the shoes are wet or hot. On a dry, short day it matters less. Do not leave a damp pair locked in the shoe overnight.

Does the design change the care?

No. All 16 covers wipe the same way. Do not soak any of them.
