The First Week in Custom Insoles

The arch feels new, and the shoe feels fuller. Wear the pair on ordinary days before you decide the length was wrong.

Person in work shoes, the kind of ordinary day to use for a first week in new insoles

The first week is not a test you pass. It is the time when a new shape is still obvious. Store insoles are often flat through the middle of the foot. This pair is not, because a PA12 shell was printed from your scan and set under the foam. People notice that on the first afternoon. This page is what that week is for, and what it is not for.

What you will notice first

Three things show up before anything else.

  • The arch. You can feel a shape under the midfoot. That is the shell. It is supposed to be there. It is not a pebble, and it is not a lump you should sand off.
  • A fuller shoe. You added a shaped stack, or you replaced a thin original with a thicker one. Toes and the top of the foot notice that before the arch does, if the shoe was already close.
  • The heel. The cup cradles the heel. If the cup is not pushed to the back of the shoe, the whole week will feel wrong for a reason that has nothing to do with the scan.

A faint smell can show up too. Air the pair in the shade, out of the shoes. Foam, fabric, and adhesive do that when they are new. Do not wash the pair to "start clean."

How to spend the days

Do not make the first outing a long one. The point of the week is ordinary use, long enough to learn the pair and short enough that a fit mistake is easy to undo in the shoes, not in your plans.

  1. Day one, indoors. Install both shoes. Walk the house in the socks you really wear. Seat the heel again if anything bunches.
  2. The next ordinary day. Wear them for the day you already had: a commute, a shift, errands. Take them out if the shoes get hot, and dry them in the shade.
  3. Before a long event. Wait until those ordinary days have happened. A first marathon, a wedding, or a travel day is a bad moment to meet a new arch.

You are not "training" your feet. You are learning whether this shoe has room for this length. Give it those ordinary days before you decide the order was the wrong length. That is the only judgment the week is meant to support.

What settles, and what does not

The foam on top compresses a little as you wear it. The fabric can feel less new. The printed shell does not mash into a lower arch because you wished it would. If someone told you a custom shell melts to your foot over seven days, that is a different product, and it is not this one. PA12 is printed so the shape stays. The cushion is the foam and the heel pad. Read what the shell does if that split is still unclear.

Hot shoes and a pair that never dries will make the foam feel tired sooner. That is wear, not the first week "finishing." Care is in how to care for them.

Check the shoe before you blame the scan

If something rubs, or the shoe feels too full, go through the install before you assume the photos were off.

  • Full Length should have replaced the original insole. If both are in the shoe, take the original out.
  • 3/4 Length should still be on top of the original, cup at the back.
  • The toe of a Full Length pair can be trimmed a few millimeters at a time. Do not cut the shell.
  • A narrow dress shoe or a cycling shoe may have no room. The week will not create room.
  • Left and right should not be swapped. The shells are not copies.

The install page is how to put custom insoles in your shoes. The length choice, if you are wondering whether the other length belongs in these shoes, is the length guide.

A desk day and a standing day are not the same test

If you sit most of the day, a first full day tells you about the shoe and the toe, and less about how the foam feels at hour eight. Wear them for that desk day anyway, then use them on a day when you are actually on your feet before you decide the pair is "too much" or "not enough." If you stand for work, do not make day one a double shift. Use a shorter block, then a normal shift. Take the insoles out on the break if the shoes are hot, and let them air. You are not scoring the arch. You are seeing whether these shoes still fit once the stack is in them.

Laces can be a half step looser across the instep on day one if the shoe feels full, then snugged once you know the stack. That is a shoe adjustment. It is not a change to the shell. If the only problem is the toe edge, trim a little and walk again the next day. If the problem is the whole shoe, the other length, or another shoe, is the next step. Not a second week of hoping the shell will lower itself.

What the week cannot decide

It cannot tell you that a sore foot is fine to ignore. If a foot hurts, see a podiatrist. This insole is a comfort product. Wearing it for seven days is not an exam, and it is not a reason to skip one.

It also cannot reopen the order. You can change or cancel within 24 hours of checkout. By the time a pair is on your feet, that window is usually closed, because the pair was made after the scan and shipped. US delivery is within 14 days. After 24 hours, a custom pair is final sale. If it arrives damaged or made wrong, email support@customsole.shop with the order number and we replace it. "The arch feels new" is not, by itself, made wrong.

After the week

If the heel stays seated, the toes still move, and the shoes you care about have room, keep wearing them. The 16 designs feel the same in the shell. Only the cover changes. If these shoes were the wrong length and another pair of shoes needs the other length, that is a second pair at the same $69.99, not a trim that turns Full Length into 3/4. How it works is still the map of scan, print, and delivery if someone else in the house is about to order.

Frequently asked questions

Should the arch feel obvious on day one?

Yes. The shell is a shape under the midfoot. Flat store insoles do not have that. Do not sand it down.

How long should I wear them the first day?

Start in the house. Use a normal day next. Save a long event for after those days, not for day one.

Will they soften into my foot?

The foam compresses a little. The printed shell keeps its shape. The pair does not melt to you.

Can I return them after a week if I dislike the feel?

The change window is 24 hours from checkout, which is before the pair is made. A cancellation in that window is refunded. After that, the pair cannot be returned or refunded. A damaged or wrong pair is replaced, not refunded.

The shoe feels tight. Is the scan wrong?

Check for two insoles stacked, a heel that is not back, and a toe edge that needs a small trim. A shoe with no spare room will feel tight with any added stack.
